Spinal Cord Injury Mental Health Support: How Reclaim Therapy + Coaching Was Born

Spinal Cord Injury Mental Health Support: How Reclaim Therapy + Coaching Was Born

By Justin Pettyjohn

There’s a difference between knowing your body might change and watching it actually happen.

As my mobility declined due to tethered cord and spinal cord surgeries became part of my reality in my mid 30’s, the hardest part wasn’t just physical.

It was mental.

The Mental Impact of Spinal Cord Issues and Mobility Loss

Physically, I feared what the future looked like for my abilities.

Mentally, I lost my identity.

I couldn’t see what life would look like if my physical abilities continued to decline.

Without that clarity, everything felt unstable.

There were seasons of hope and seasons that felt like doom. But if I’m honest, it felt like more doom than hope.

No matter how disciplined I was with physical therapy.
No matter how committed I was in the gym.
No matter how much I tried to “do the right things.”

The nerve damage continued to occur..

And mentally, I couldn’t see a fulfilling life if I didn’t get better physically. The thought of eventually using a wheelchair felt like the end and that moment eventually arrived.

Searching for Spinal Cord Injury Mental Health Therapy

Like many people navigating life-changing health conditions, I sought therapy.

I searched specifically for spinal cord injury mental health support. I looked for therapists who specialized in disability, mobility changes, or life after major health shifts. I even explored life coaching for disability-related identity changes.

But something was missing.

The therapists were kind and professional. But the conversations lacked depth in one crucial area:

Reassurance that there is life on the other side living with a disability.

I did most of the talking during these sessions. I could articulate how I felt. That wasn’t the issue. The issue was feedback.

If a provider hasn’t worked closely with individuals navigating mobility loss or spinal cord conditions, it’s difficult to confidently say:

“You can build a fulfilling, meaningful life living with a disability.”

And when you're facing identity loss and fear about the future, that reassurance matters.

When Disability Changes More Than Your Body

My wife, Kaitlyn a licensed clinical social worker knew it would be beneficial for me to have support navigating these changes.

Not because I was weak.
But because disability affects more than physical strength.

It impacts:

  • Identity

  • Confidence

  • Career direction

  • Marriage

  • Independence

  • Long-term goals

And she was adapting too. We both were.

We searched for providers who specialized in supporting individuals whose health challenges had changed their life trajectory not as a diagnostic checkbox, but as the core focus of their work.

We couldn’t find it.

The Turning Point: Mental Health After Mobility Changes

During one particularly heavy season, Kaitlyn said something simple but direct:

She could accept the new physical version of me.

What she couldn’t accept was the new mental version of me.

The negativity.
The hopelessness.
The half-empty mindset.

That statement changed everything.

I realized I couldn’t control my physical limitations.

But I could control my outlook.

And mental health after spinal cord issues or mobility loss isn’t just about coping.  it’s about perspective, confidence, and identity reconstruction.

So I made a decision:

If I couldn’t control what my body was doing, I would control what my mind was doing.

Slowly, my positive outlook began to shadow my disability instead of the other way around.

Why We Founded Reclaim Therapy + Coaching

That’s when Reclaim Therapy + Coaching became more than an idea.

We realized there was a gap in specialized mental health therapy and life coaching for individuals navigating:

  • Spinal cord issues

  • Mobility decline

  • Wheelchair use

  • Chronic illness

  • Life-changing health conditions

Not generic therapy.

Not surface-level encouragement.

But focused support for rebuilding confidence, redefining independence, and reclaiming identity.

Reclaim Therapy + Coaching was founded to fill that gap.

Therapy and Coaching for Life After Spinal Cord Injury

At Reclaim Therapy + Coaching, we specialize in:
